Stair Climbing with Crutches

Stair climbing with crutches will be learned in the hospital. Your physical therapist will train you to climb stairs safely. Do not attempt to climb stairs alone unless your physical therapist gives you permission to do so.

Climbing Up with Crutches

  1. Place your non-operated leg up onto the first step.
  2. Push with that leg and your hands to lift your other leg onto the same step.
  3. Keep the crutches(or cane) with your operated leg.
  4. Continue this sequence until you have reached the top.
  5. If you have a rail, place the crutches in one hand and hold the rail with the other.

Stepping Down with Crutches

  1. Place the crutches(or cane) down onto the first step.
  2. Then place your operated leg down onto that step.
  3. Place as much weight on the operated leg as allowed.
  4. Then bring your non-operated leg down onto that step.
  5. Continue this sequence until you have reached the bottom.
