Sex After Hip Replacement Surgery
The guidelines for sex after hip replacement surgery
will be discussed with you by your surgeon prior to
your surgery. If he doesn't, ask him about it. If you
feel uncomfortable asking him, you can wait until after
your surgery and discuss it with your physical therapist.
She'll probably have a handout with illustrations of safe positions. How long should you wait before you resume sexual activity? That will depend on your pain level, your weight
bearing status, your mobility. Ask your physical or
occupational therapist. They have the greatest knowledge about your functional ability and mobility.
Don't forget about your total hip precautions. You
don't want to end up dislocating your new hip.
Here's a reminder of movements/positions to avoid
during sex, while your hip is still healing:
DO NOT
- Cross your legs
- Turn your toes in (pigeon-toed)
- Lean towards non-operated side
- Bend your hip at an angle greater than 90 degrees
back
