Free Radicals
Free radicals and oxidants are the result of normal metabolism in your
body. But if they are not properly controlled by your body, they can
create havoc.
Free radicals and oxidants are highly reactive and unstable compounds
produced by your body. They are unattached molecules floating freely
around in your body that attack cell membranes. In defense, your body
manufactures, or takes in from outside sources, antioxidants to find
and eliminate free radicals before they can cause damage. In a healthy
body, free radicals and oxidants are destroyed. But in a body
that's lacking the necessary vitamins and minerals, toxins develop that
can impede this process by creating too many free radicals for the
antioxidants to handle.
There are different ways you can combat free radicals and oxidants.
Antioxidants and free radical quenchers can be found in foods and
supplements.
